Dev Log #1 — Level 1: Building the Foundation

How Hot Chocolate established its combat vocabulary on Earth 3 before later worlds began bending the rules.

Earth Invasion

Level 1 had a different responsibility from every level that followed: it needed to establish what normal combat looked like before wormholes, gravity fields, possession, reflection, and the campaign’s stranger ideas arrived. Carter begins as a contractor expecting another job, only to watch the attack on Earth 3’s capital pull him into something much larger.

Start Familiar

The opening keeps its fundamentals recognizable so players can learn to move, shoot, read formations, boost, dodge, manage missiles, and survive a vertically advancing battlefield.

  • Enemy ships and patrol formations
  • Bullets, missiles, shields, and power-ups
  • Minibosses and a final boss
  • A vertically advancing battlefield

A World Changing Around the Player

The four stages travel from City to Mountain to Water to Destroyed Town. The route is meant to feel like a journey through an active invasion, with the final environment showing the damage already done to the world the player is trying to protect.

Learning Boss Scale

Level 1 taught us that enormous health alone does not make a satisfying boss. Durability gives an encounter time to develop, but pressure and mechanics make that time interesting. Balance moved in both directions as player damage and progression evolved.

Boss difficulty needs to come from pressure and mechanics, not only from health.

Readable Arenas and Pressure

The boss boundary stays out of the player’s way until the boss actually arrives, then contains the fight. Early enemy pressure was also revisited repeatedly so difficulty comes from readable formations and a limited number of direct attackers rather than an unavoidable wall of ships.
