Dev Log #4 — Level 4: Turning the Player’s Weapons Against Them
Level 4 turns the player’s own weapons into a strategic problem through redirection, regeneration, reflection, and consumption.
Planet Core Descent
After Level 3 taught players to respect environmental hazards, Level 4 manipulates something even more fundamental: the bullets and missiles players normally use to control the battlefield.
Stage 1 — Redirect
Emitters can turn player bullets and missiles, teaching pilots to consider a projectile’s path after it leaves the ship rather than firing automatically.
Stage 2 — Sustain
Shield-regeneration areas restore enemies within a substantial radius. The obvious target is not always the correct target when a battlefield system is keeping everything else alive.
Stage 3 — Reflect
Timed reflection sends attacks back at the player. Its radius and cooldown were tuned to create a readable decision—wait for the opening—rather than randomly punish shooting.
Stage 4 — Consume
Void bombs absorb bullets and missiles, completing the progression from redirect to sustain to reflect to consume. By the final stage, firing is no longer an automatic answer.
The Final Boss as an Exam
The final boss combines systems the campaign has already taught instead of introducing an unrelated trick. Solaris required special consideration because a continuous beam must still participate meaningfully in reflection, absorption, and other environmental interactions.
A difficult mechanic should make the player say, ‘I should have waited,’ not, ‘How was I supposed to know?’
