Dev Log #6 — Level 6: Building the Haunted Compound

Inside the Veridian expedition, ghosts turn dormant wrecks into evolving threats and make ownership of the battlefield unstable.

The Veridian Expedition

After Level 5’s scale and surrealism, Level 6 becomes more intimate and unsettling. Carter’s team needs a replacement power core and travels to an old compound tied to Echo’s history—a place that is effectively haunted.

Start With a Graveyard

The approach begins among sparse wrecks from an old war, with the compound and Veridian beyond them. Restraint keeps each dead ship significant: the player is flying toward somewhere they probably should not enter.

Possession Changes What an Enemy Is

Dormant ships drift through the battlefield without necessarily being enemies. Ghosts search for those vessels and possess them, allowing the combat space itself to generate new threats.

Possession stacks visibly as more spirits enter one ship, making it increasingly dangerous. Destroying the vessel ejects its ghosts so they can seek another host; killing one enemy may therefore create the next problem.

Red Ghosts and the Tether

Fast, durable red ghosts create elite possessed vessels when they reach a wreck, making interception important before they fire a shot. Ordinary ghosts remain dangerous too: at close range, a tether slows the player and pulls the ship toward the spirit with strength that increases through proximity.

Dormant Ships as a Resource

Dormant vessels are capped, drift through the play area, and are removed when no longer relevant. Boss encounters can bring more in from the sides, turning wrecks into potential enemy infrastructure rather than scenery.

Escalating Possessed Combat

Possessed ships orient toward the player while attacking. Teleporting begins after Stage 1 and becomes more frequent later, while independently spawned elite vessels use stronger attributes, evasive movement, and useful combat distance instead of blindly ramming.

Later stages introduce destructible blue homing missiles. A hit can release more ghosts around the player and temporarily disable specials or equipment, creating a survival window built around movement and core weapons.

Bosses That Build Across the Level

All four bosses use alternating chained gunfire. Each encounter adds pressure—ghosts, then homing missiles, then lasers—before the final boss combines the possession ecosystem and can unleash red ghosts.

Four Environments, One Descent

  • Veridian approach and ship graveyard
  • Planet and compound exterior
  • Old, worn interior corridor
  • Power-core compound

Charcoal surfaces, decay, damaged electronics, and restrained blue energy fractures create atmosphere without obscuring ships and projectiles.
