Dev Log #7 — From Prototype to Launch

A high-level look at how Hot Chocolate grew from a simple arcade shooter into a six-level campaign with its own ships, systems, worlds, and combat rules.

From One Battlefield to an Entire Campaign

Hot Chocolate began with a straightforward goal: build a fast top-down shooter with movement, missiles, enemy fleets, minibosses, and a final boss. As development continued, the project became much more about giving every part of the campaign its own identity.

Six Levels, Six Different Problems

The campaign now spans six major levels. Earth establishes the combat fundamentals. Orbit expands battlefield pressure. The Frozen Planet makes the environment dangerous. The Planet Core manipulates the player's own attacks. Cosmic Distortion starts breaking the rules of reality. The Haunted Compound turns dormant ships and possession into part of the battlefield itself.

The goal became simple: reaching a new level should mean learning something new, not just fighting enemies with more health.

Warships With Different Identities

The playable fleet expanded beyond a single fighter. Different ships now emphasize bullets, missiles, speed, heavy weapons, lasers, special abilities, and different talent paths.

Equipment and talents give those ships additional flexibility without removing the identity of the ship underneath the build.

Combat Systems That Talk to Each Other

One of the largest changes during development was making weapons interact with the world. Projectiles can be redirected, reflected, consumed, captured by gravity, transported through wormholes, or affected differently depending on the ship firing them.

Bosses, elites, environmental hazards, shields, equipment, and ship abilities increasingly became parts of the same combat system instead of isolated features.

More Than Campaign Completion

Achievements, leaderboards, Challenges, equipment progression, ship builds, the News Hub, customization, and account features grew around the campaign to give players more to pursue after clearing a mission.

Launch Day

September 1, 2026 marks the official launch of Hot Chocolate. It is also a checkpoint rather than an ending. The foundation is now in place for additional campaign levels, new Challenges, balance passes, improvements, and whatever comes after Veridian.

Every level should make the player rethink something they thought they already understood.
