Level 9 — The Clairmont
After Earth 3 turns its weapons on the Freedom, Carter and the Reach break through a defensive fleet to reach the Clairmont—and the missing contact held inside it.
THE FLEET IS NO LONGER HOME
The Reckoning ended with a question Earth 3 could no longer explain away. Its ships reached Veridian before the Freedom's warning should have arrived, knew too much about what Carter found beneath Orpheon, and opened fire when he refused to surrender the truth. Level 9 begins in the aftermath of that betrayal. Carter is not chasing another distant anomaly; he is moving against the command structure that sent him into danger and then tried to contain what he brought back.
There is a person at the heart of that decision. For much of the journey, an unnamed contact inside Earth 3 has passed Carter coordinates, warnings, and fragments of reports that Command kept buried. Their history reaches back before this crisis, making her more than an informant. Then the messages stopped. Carter now has reason to believe she is alive aboard the Clairmont, a vast Earth 3 command vessel. Getting to her means confronting a military machine built to keep both her and its secrets inside.
FOUR STAGES, ONE BREACH
A RESCUE BEHIND THE FIGHT
A broken transmission inside the hangar confirms what Carter hoped but could not prove: his contact is alive. Yet flying straight toward her would only bring the Clairmont's defenses to the same location. The crew chooses a harder plan. Carter remains visible, draws Commander Durne's attention, and keeps the Wraith occupied while his family aboard the Freedom moves through another part of the ship. The rescue unfolds in brief communications behind the duel, so the battle's objective changes from reaching her to giving everyone enough time to escape.
The distinction matters. Earth 3 as an institution has betrayed Carter, but someone within it risked her freedom to help him expose the truth. Level 9 is about refusing to confuse the two. The crew does not need to destroy the Clairmont to make its point. Breaching it, recovering their ally, and surviving what Durne sends after them is a more personal victory—and leaves a powerful, wounded vessel in the story for what follows.
THE QUESTION THE WRAITH LEAVES BEHIND
The Wraith does not resemble the familiar blue-and-gray defense craft stationed in the hangar. Its red-lit frame and spatial repositioning reveal a side of Earth 3 technology the crew did not know existed. Where did it come from? Was it developed in secret, recovered from somewhere else, or shaped by the same discoveries Command insisted were unknown? The answer remains open. After the Machine Core, the Noctyri, the Hollow, and the Veilheart, the most unsettling mystery may now be what people at home knew all along.
