The Hearthbound

Guardians of the fire that dreams beneath the ice

An Iskari religious-military order sworn to protect the sacred depths that are actually access routes into the Machine Core.

Faith Born From Survival

The Hearthbound inherit stories of settlements saved by heat arriving at the correct moment, tunnels sealing before collapse, and lethal pressure finding another path. To them these events are proof that a dreaming fire beneath the ice knows and protects the Iskari.

The order protects geothermal sanctuaries, sealed passages, and ancient thresholds. Many of those sites are planetary maintenance routes or access apertures. The Hearthbound therefore defend the Machine Core without understanding its full nature, while the Core's Custodians quietly reinforce the conditions that sustain their faith.

Carter as Intruder

Kharaxi forces arrive above Iskara and Carter follows close behind. From the Hearthbound perspective, two off-world military powers have entered sacred territory in coordination. Carter's Earth-origin technology also causes the Core to issue an Origin-Species Contact classification, escalating a misunderstanding already sharpened by the Great Stirring.

The Tragedy of the Hearth

The Hearthbound are not simply guards placed in the player's path. They are a civilization defending the force that kept it alive. The fact that the force is a frightened planetary machine does not make centuries of rescue unreal; it makes the truth more difficult.
