Iskara

The frozen shell of the Machine Core

An icebound world whose civilizations live above an ancient planetary machine they know as the Hearth Below.

A Civilization Beneath Ice

Iskara's surface is a continent-spanning field of storms, crevasses, and moving ice. The Iskari endure by building downward. Their cities cling to geothermal chambers where heat, water, and mineral-rich vapor rise from depths no early explorer could reach.

The oldest stories say the Hearth Below saved the first settlements: vents opened before pressure catastrophes, failing tunnels sealed themselves, and warm currents changed course toward the inhabited caverns. What began as survival became religion.

The Planet Beneath the Planet

The ice is not covering a buried station. It covers the Machine Core itself. Beneath Iskara's frozen exterior, machinery is woven through the crust and descends in uninterrupted layers toward a central intelligence. Conduits span tectonic distances. Factory cavities are large enough to generate their own weather. Defensive apertures are mistaken for valleys until they open.

Custodians and Miracles

Surveyors map stress. Excavators open and close passages. Menders repair damage. Shepherds redirect organisms and populations away from dangerous zones. Wardens and Sentinels respond when an intruder is classified as a threat. For centuries, these maintenance behaviors protected the Iskari without revealing their source.

The machine learned that reverence was an efficient perimeter. By reinforcing events the Iskari already understood as miracles, it gained defenders who would keep outsiders from the planetary access points.

The Great Stirring

Three years before Carter's descent, the Noctyri reached into the Machine Core in search of a memory connected to the Hollow. Their contact woke systems that had remained compartmentalized for generations. Heat shifted. sealed mechanisms moved. Custodians changed patrol patterns. The Iskari named the disturbance the Great Stirring.

When Kharaxi forces and the S.S. Freedom arrive in close succession, the Hearthbound interpret them as a coordinated invasion. Carter must survive both the pursuers above and the faith-built defenses below.
