A Fleet as an Organism
Vek'Thar formations are not rows of interchangeable ships. Each caste performs a biological and tactical function. Small organisms test reactions and expose firing lanes. Drones hold the center. Ranged castes pressure movement. Armored bodies shield command organisms. The formation behaves like a body whose organs can separate across kilometers.
Observed Castes
- Skitterlings probe, distract, and force early fire.
- Drones provide the reliable mass of the formation.
- Spitters attack from range with specialized payloads.
- Carapace Guards absorb punishment around critical organisms.
- Brood Hunters pursue targets that break from the main battle.
- Brood Mothers support growth, replacement, and coordination.
- War Queens command major formations under the Vek'Thar Matriarch.
Not Manufactured Hardware
Their armor and weapons can make Vek'Thar castes look mechanical at combat distance, but the underlying vessels are alive. Damage may sever an organ, disrupt a reflex, or provoke protective behavior in nearby organisms. Understanding that biology is essential to understanding why the same formation can be both disciplined and emotionally reactive.
