Hot Chocolate

One pilot, one contract, and a war older than the truth

Carter's defense of Earth 3 becomes a pursuit across living fleets, a frozen machine-planet, a fracture in reality, and the graveyard of Veridian.

The Contract That Opened the War

Hot Chocolate begins with a job that appears brutally simple: defend Earth 3 from an invading Kharaxi force. Carter enters the battle in the S.S. Freedom expecting targets, orders, and a clean line between attacker and defender. Instead, every destroyed organism and recovered signal pulls the campaign backward through history. The invasion is not random, the Kharaxi are not a mindless swarm, and Earth 3 is not an innocent point on a map.

The Vek'Thar Broodline has crossed generations of space to collect a debt humanity deliberately forgot. Beneath that grievance is another signal: an ancient network signature the Kharaxi call the Silent Queen. Carter's pursuit of the invaders becomes a pursuit of that signal, and the signal leads toward a world whose ice is only a skin.

A Trail Through Broken Worlds

  • Earth Invasion — Carter meets the Vek'Thar assault and learns that the battle is both revenge and search.
  • Orbital Warzone — the pursuit leaves the atmosphere and enters a field of organized living warships.
  • Descent Into the Core — the frozen world of Iskara reveals that the Machine Core is planetary in scale.
  • Through the Fracture — the Noctyri and the Hollow expose the fear inside the ancient intelligence.
  • Orpheon — Carter enters Veridian's dead research compound and learns why its trapped consciousnesses never completed the Returning.
  • The Veil — collapse seals the route back and opens a descent into the beautiful living interior beneath the graveyard world, where the sanctuary of the dead is burning.

The Thread Beneath Every Conflict

The campaign's worlds are connected by the same impossible machine and by the different meanings every civilization projects onto it. The Kharaxi sense a queen. The Iskari worship a sleeping heat beneath the ice. Helix researchers see a tool capable of conquering death. The Vaelori understand an entire planetary ecology through which life, memory, and death remain continuous. The Noctyri see opposing cosmic states whose imbalance can unmake reality. The Core itself sees only loss—something to prevent, copy, contain, and preserve, regardless of whether preservation becomes imprisonment.

A War About Memory

Behind the gunfire, Hot Chocolate is a story about what civilizations choose to remember. Humanity buries the Burning Brood and falsifies the record of Veridian. Vek'Thar turns memory into inherited vengeance. The Vaelori understand death as return. The Machine Core mistakes retained information for salvation. Carter flies through the wreckage left when memory becomes law, religion, weapon, and cage.
