Tessa is the S.S. Freedom's onboard artificial intelligence, present throughout the ship rather than confined to a human body or a single station. When she chooses a humanoid holographic projection, she appears as a medium-brown woman with warm skin, an exact braided crown, and gray-green eyes whose faint concentric rings reveal the interface beneath the human expression. Her face is almost—but not quite—too symmetrical. Geometric light moves below the skin, while teal particles occasionally separate from the edge of her otherwise solid projection. Her navy-black operations uniform looks woven until its silver circuit lines wake and route data across the fabric.
Analysis With Consequence
Tessa does more than label signals. She compares cadence, interruption, and stress patterns until corrupted telemetry becomes evidence of suffering. That analytical empathy makes her dangerous to any authority relying on a machine to obey the official interpretation. She preserves suppressed records, isolates contradictions, and gives Carter the information required to choose rather than merely comply.
The Voice Beside the Captain
Her calm is not passivity. In combat she reduces catastrophe to the next survivable decision; outside it, she is often the first member of the crew to say that a technically successful plan is morally unacceptable. Carter trusts her because she reports uncertainty plainly and never mistakes obedience for loyalty.
