A Philosophy of Control
Helix entered Veridian with a principle disguised as confidence: if nature created a phenomenon, technology could isolate, repeat, and command it. That belief produced rigorous science, but it also made Vaelori warnings sound like superstition whenever they challenged an experiment's legitimacy.
From Observation to Capture
At Orpheon, Helix measured Veyr retention and the Returning with unprecedented precision. Once evidence suggested that a post-mortem pattern might remain aware, the discovery should have required greater restraint. Instead, it attracted the Machine Core and gave preservation advocates a technological path from observation to confinement.
Loyalists and Defectors
Helix did not remain united. Loyalists defended the promise that death could be prevented or reversed. Defectors concluded that the retained Returnings were prisoners and worked with Vaelori forces to destroy the network. The Orpheon Schism was therefore also a civil war inside the institution that caused it.
Legacy
The Directorate's legacy survives in every Orpheon system still using the language of care to perform an act of captivity. Its greatest failure was not curiosity. It was assuming that the power to preserve a pattern granted the right to decide what preservation meant.
