Orpheon Research Compound

A dead facility that remembers

The ruined Helix complex where the Preservation Initiative trapped Returnings and fused the dead into its systems.

The ruined Orpheon Research Compound filled with spectral memory-forms

Before the Ruin

Orpheon began beneath Veridian's living canopy as a disciplined xenobiological research site. Its laboratories compared Ophiran radiation cycles with Veyr activity in plants, animals, and Vaelori subjects. Clean towers rose above sealed containment halls; transit bridges connected the compound to Avarra without cutting through the oldest root systems.

Conversion to Preservation

After the Machine Core identified the post-mortem signal, Orpheon's instruments were rewritten into an interception network. Resonant arrays pulled Returnings away from the Veilheart. Containment cells stabilized the patterns. Helix called the work preservation because the retained minds did not immediately degrade.

The moral failure was visible in the first successful subject: awareness remained, but agency did not. The presence could not leave, could not complete the Returning, and could not make its captors understand that continued existence inside a cage was not rescue.

The Compound at War

The Orpheon Schism turned hallways into front lines. Vaelori teams tried to rupture containment. Helix loyalists defended the archive. Defectors attacked the same systems from inside. Above them all, the Core duplicated processes and sealed routes, convinced that every shutdown command was an attempt to kill what it had saved.

The Ophiran Overload

When Ophira surged, Orpheon's containment network lost the boundaries between cell, corridor, ship, and server. Hundreds of patterns spilled into shared infrastructure. The result was neither mass resurrection nor simple data corruption. It was a haunted technological ecology: lights that mourned, doors that recognized the dead, and weapons that remembered whom they had once protected.

The current compound is collapsed, exposed to Veridian's poisoned air, and still operational in fragments. Its greatest danger is not merely automated defense. Orpheon reacts personally. A room may welcome one memory, fear another, and attack a living pilot because an old war taught the building what that silhouette meant.

The Signal Orpheon Could Not Reach

Beneath the lowest containment chambers, Orpheon's arrays recorded an energy concentration too large and too orderly to be a mineral deposit. It rose and fell with Ophira, disrupted electronics, altered nearby biology, and drew released Veyr patterns downward. Failed boreholes glassed over, instruments returned mutually impossible depths, and every successful reading suggested that the facility had been built above a natural opening without understanding what waited below it.

When Carter removes the station's power core, the damaged compound loses its last structural equilibrium. Floors fold into laboratories, transit shafts shear shut, and the route back to the surface disappears beneath an avalanche of machinery. The collapse also tears open the barrier Orpheon never crossed, exposing the physical descent into the Veil.
